Prof. Hongbin Sun is Chang Jiang Scholar Professor of Electrical Engineering, head of Smart Grid Energy Management Research Group, and the deputy director of the Academic Affair Office, Tsinghua University. Prof. Sun is the co-author of over 280 peer-reviewed papers and 4 books. He held over 60 patents in China, one patent in USA and one patent in Europe.

He is currently IEEE senior member and IET Fellow. He also serves as the editor of the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, and a member of the Editorial Board of four international journals and two Chinese journals.

Prof. Sun has worked with industry for the last 18 years on electric power system operation and control issues with specific interests in the smart grids, renewable energy resource integration, electrical vehicle to power grid, demand response and energy storage. He has been awarded over ¥80M research grants as the principal investigator on electrical grid modernization issues. He is the principal investigator for an on-going MOST-sponsored 973 program which studies the next generation of Energy Management System (EMS) for smart grids.

He is also the principal investigator for several ongoing international collaborative projects on smart grid operation and control, such as Tsinghua-Berkeley joint research fund and China-UK Joint Research Fund (NSFC-RCUK_EPSRC). In recent 15 years, he led a research group at Tsinghua University to develop an energy management system (EMS), “the brain of power grid”, which has been applied to over 70 electrical power control centers in China.

He also has developed a system-wide automatic voltage control system (AVC), which has been put into operation in 5 regional power grids (5/6 of total China), 20 provincial power grids (2/3 of total China), 6 wind farm bases (3/4 of total China) and more than 60 large-scale wind farms. Until the end of 2013, there have been 540 large-scale power plants to be controlled by the innovative AVC, with the generation capacity of 508GW, which is about 50% of the total installed generation capacity in China. The innovative AVC has also been implemented in PJM, the largest regional power grid in North America covering 13 states including Washington DC, to pursue a balance result of security and economy for the PJM grid in USA.

In 2011, he was appointed as ChangJiang Scholar Professor by Education Ministry of China.

In 2012, he was elected as a Fellow of Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).

In 2013, he was elected as National Outstanding Middle-aged Expert, and as to the National Talents Engineering.

In 2015, He received special government allowances of the State Council, and elected as a Leading Talent on Innovation by Ministry of Science and Technology.
